Explosion proof enclosures are products that have an electrical short and have been exclusively created as a protection against ignition hazards like detonations. These enclosures can be made of various varieties of materials. Amongst these the normally used components are aluminum, fiber glass and heavy duty steel. Explosion resistant enclosures are used at many important locations like paint factories, gas stations and oil refineries. Explosions in the electric nets are usually caused due the formation of the fire triangle. The fire triangle is formed by three components. These are the spark or the ignition point, fuel and oxygen. When these three are mixed in a specific ratio, electrical explosion occurs.
To stay inside the normal safety limits, the volume ratio of the fuel to the oxygen must not go beyond the volume ratio existing between the common explosive point of the fuel, and the source of lighting. On exceeding the proportion, a discharge in the energy takes place, causing lighting in the fire triangle mixture. The detonation proof enclosures aid in removing the potential explosion chance by removing all the lighting sources from the site. An enclosure that is internationally qualified as having all explosion proof qualities must be used for the purpose. The explosion resistant enclosures work by withstanding all the three internal forces which might otherwise accumulate in causing an explosion.
An explosion proof enclosure requires being in a special layout and design. An organized figure will verify that hot gases to pass through the ventilation systems which will allow the electrical arrangement to remain cool, at a temperature under the critical ignition point, in case, there is some hazardous fuel. This is the cause why the enclosures are made using hard components like aluminum and cast steel. The enclosures also need to have ample flanges. The rims should be grounded to the finish and should posses a good tolerance.
The explosive resistant enclosures in coordination with the threaded cover will generate long and narrow paths. The potential dangerous hot gases will run through these thread tubes, giving up the heat to the metal, and in the process cutting the explosive force. However, the cover bolts of the enclosure must be well torque to the suggested value. Also, it is to be kept in mind that the projection surfaces of the explosion proof enclosure remains protected throughout from marks. This is because, if the torque is not correctly generated and the projected surfaces are broken, then the resultant hot gases will leak away. Besides, the chances of explosion will become more if the outside air of the enclosure is prone is explosion.
This is the cause why, the explosion proof enclosures are always exist in nearly every kind of factory. Each electric device has its own functionalities and thus the enclosures required for different functions are labeled consequently, also keeping in mind the environmental rules set up by the National Electrical Code or as per the IEC Standards.
