So you’ve got your plan, you’ve worked out what you want your website to do. You’ve thought of some keywords and come up with a name and domain name to go with them.

Which registrar? (The company you register you domain with)

I’m not going to recommend anyone, unless someone wants to sponsor me :) . Just do a Google search for “domain name” and you’ll find most registrars are around the same price. US$10 per year or less for a .com or .net is a good price. Also, I would suggest finding a registrar that offers privacy protection (usually about US$2 per year). Otherwise you e-mail address, phone number and personal details are available for the world to see by doing a Whois.

I don’t really think other extensions are worth the US$30 or so per year, unless they are relevant to your site. If you have some video news site and get a .tv, well that’s useful. Not to your search engine rank or anything. It just looks classy.

Just don’t EVER register a domain with Register.com! (They’re probably going to sue me now). A .com is about US$35 per year. What do they offer for this astronomical price? Basically, poor customer service and not much else. They also make it as difficult as possible to transfer your domains out. You have to e-mail them, then they can’t work out what you’re talking about even though you state quite clearly that you need the “Authorisation code” to transfer your domain name out.

I would recommend against going with any company that’s too cheap also. If the prices seems too good to be true, it probably is. Pick someone that seems reliable and I suggest getting the privacy protection.
