Now you’ve got the domain name. I’m going to assume you’ve worked out that you have to buy web hosting and that you have to link you domain with it. If you need me to write an article on that too, let me know and I’ll see what I can do :) .
Otherwise, let’s get on with it. I’ll briefly explain SEO and what to do about it.

Here’s the Wikipedia.org definition:

Search engine optimization (SEO) is the process of improving the volume and quality of traffic to a web site from search engines via “natural” (”organic” or “algorithmic”) search results.

So in super-simple terms, SEO is making your website more search engine friendly. This includes making it accessible to search engines, having good quality content and having backlinks (we’ll cover backlinks and how to get them later) from good-quality websites. This is what I’ll primarily be covering in future articles.

Recently, thanks to a friend, I’ve become obsessed with SEO. I think you could probably spend your entire life tweaking your website to get you up the top of every search engine result. The sad reality is, that the things you tweaked last week to get you at the top of Google’s results, might not work this next week.

The main things effecting this are:

  • Search engines are constantly improving their search and ranking algorithms
  • New websites are starting everyday and old websites are closing down
  • Content on other website is changing, increasing or decreasing their rank

There is nothing you can do about any of this (unless you take over the world). My point is that you shouldn’t get obsessed with SEO. You should be more worried about having quality content of your website. But there are many, many simple things you can do to boost your rank (and more importantly, allow search engines to actually access your pages), that are often overlooked by webmasters.

Thus far, I’ve introduced you to a few, including:

  • Thinking up a name for your website which includes some good keywords
  • Then finding a domain name that includes some of your keywords

These are the foundation of a successful website. Well at least one that’s going to make it up the top of search engine results. I can’t help it if you’re selling a crap product or have information on something no one cares about. :P

Next, I’ll be covering some of my favourite SEO tools. These include tools which will tell you what you’re doing wrong and tools that will give you an indication of how you’re doing in the ranks.

I’ve started keeping a log of how my website’s doing, so you can see for yourself that what I’m teaching you, will help your website. Note though, that these ranks and values are just indications, they’re not always accurate.
